First edition of the most important work devoted to the history and archaeological remains of Chaul and Bassein (modern-day Vasai), two of the principal Portuguese settlements on the western coast of India. A physician, Orientalist and archaeologist, José Gerson da Cunha traces the history of the two cities from their origins through the period of Portuguese rule, describing their fortifications, churches, inscriptions, monuments and archaeological remains on the basis of extensive documentary research and field surveys. The work remains a fundamental source for the study of the Portuguese presence in India and the historical heritage of the Konkan region.
