Description
[INDIA] GRIGGS, William (1832–1911). The Ancient Monuments, Temples and Sculptures of India. The Earliest Monuments [WITH:] Part II: Medieval Monuments. London: W. Griggs, 1897.
A rare (no copies recorded at auction, RBH) and monumental work devoted to the archaeological and architectural heritage of India, produced by William Griggs using documentation preserved at the India Office in London. The work reproduces, with exceptional technical quality, hundreds of monuments, temples, sculptures and architectural complexes from ancient and medieval India, and remains an important visual record of the condition of numerous sites prior to the restoration campaigns of the twentieth century. The plates were produced using the innovative photochromolithographic process perfected by Griggs himself, one of the foremost photographers and printers of the Victorian period. The introductory and descriptive texts are by the celebrated archaeologist James Burgess (1832–1916), one of the pioneers of scientific archaeology in British India.
2 vols., folio (375 × 270 mm). The first volume comprises 170 photographic plates; the second comprises plates 171–340 (plate 183 is missing). Plates and text are loose, as originally issued in the publisher’s cloth portfolios, preserved in the original wooden cases with leather spines (one case has one panel detached; metal clasps are missing).
