Description
MIR HASHIM (attributed to). Portrait of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. [Northern India, Rajasthan or Punjab, second half of the 17th century]. A refined portrait of the Mughal emperor Nur al-Din Jahangir (1569–1627), the fourth ruler of the Mughal dynasty, shown in profile holding a globe in his right hand, his left hand resting on the hilt of his scimitar. Sumptuously dressed and adorned with multiple strands of pearls, Jahangir is depicted as a young man, yet already invested with the emblems of imperial authority. Of particular note is the patka wrapped around his waist, which combines motifs associated with the Rajput textile tradition with geometrical ornamentation of Islamic inspiration, reflecting the dual cultural heritage of the Mughal court. The miniature follows a successful iconographic model of the emperor and is attributed to Mir Hashim, a painter active at the courts of Jahangir, Shah Jahan and, subsequently, Aurangzeb. Two Persian inscriptions, probably added at a later date, identify the sitter as Badshah Nur al-Din Jahangir and, below, give the attribution ‘Amal-e Amir Hashim’ (Work of Amir Hashim); the spelling of the name ‘Hashim’ is, however, unusual, suggesting caution should be exercised when interpreting the inscription as an autograph signature. Dating from the second half of the seventeenth century, the portrait may originally have been intended for inclusion in an album of portraits, a practice widespread in Mughal courtly culture. (A)mir Hashim (also known as Mir Hashim) was among the most accomplished and celebrated painters at the Mughal courts of Jahangir, Shah Jahan (1628–58) and, during the early years of his reign, Aurangzeb (1658–1707). Miniature on burnished paper, approximately (200 × 110 mm), set within a later paper border decorated with gilt floral and foliate motifs, 335 × 215 mm overall. Occasional small holes and minor traces of worm damage, without significantly affecting the overall quality of the miniature. (1)
