Description
MIR HASHIM (attributed to). Portrait of Commander 'Azim Khan. [North-western India, Rajasthan or Punjab, second half of the 17th century].
A refined portrait of ‘Azim Khan, a commander and dignitary at the Mughal court, depicted in his later years and sumptuously dressed in a green overcoat embellished with gilt floral motifs, a red tunic dotted with gold, and a white turban. In his hands he holds a small open manuscript, its pages meticulously inscribed in two columns, an evocative detail emphasising the sitter’s learned and spiritual character. ‘Azim Khan, a Mughal military commander who served under Akbar and Jahangir, is said to have joined the Chishtiyya Sufi order later in life. Set against a gold background, the miniature bears two Persian inscriptions in nasta’liq, possibly added at a later date: above, ‘Azim Khan, identifying the sitter, and below, ‘Amal-e Mir Hashim (Work of Mir Hashim). As with the portrait of Jahangir from the same group, however, the attribution should be treated with caution. The reverse side retains traces of Persian text in nasta’liq, together with the ruled layout (mistara), suggesting that a manuscript leaf was reused for the painting. The work provides an interesting example of the interplay between Mughal pictorial traditions and developments within the Rajput schools during the second half of the seventeenth century, and was probably once part of a portrait album, later remounted within a decorative border.
Miniature on paper, approximately (255 × 330 mm) within a paper border decorated with gilt floral and foliate motifs, probably late 18th century. A few wormholes and minimal signs of age; overall in good condition. (1)
