Description
[PAHARI MINIATURE]. Radha Awaiting Krishna at Night. [Northern India, Pahari school, probably Kangra, 18th century].
A refined Pahari miniature depicting Radha awaiting Krishna at night, set in an idyllic landscape beside a river. Standing alone in the landscape and holding a flower in her right hand, the gopi looks back over her shoulder as she waits for her beloved. The composition is dominated by the large tree on the left, its foliage rendered in meticulous detail, whilst the river, clouds and vegetation in the distance are depicted with greater softness. Particular care is also evident in the delicate rendering of the female figure’s face, hair and costume. The subject belongs to the rich iconographic tradition surrounding the love and separation of Radha and Krishna, a central theme in the painting of northern India. The composition may also relate to the ragamala tradition, in which emotional states and amorous situations are associated with musical modes: here, the scene would evoke viraha, the longing born of separation and the anticipation of the beloved. An attribution to the Pahari school, probably within the Kangra tradition, is suggested by the delicacy of the female figure and the particular sensitivity with which the landscape is rendered.
Miniature on paper, (255 × 295 mm), within a double border, the inner border gilded with fine orange lines and the outer border blue, outlined in gold, yellow and white; mounted within a later textile frame decorated with polychrome floral motifs, probably 19th century. In excellent condition. (1)
