Description
CORONELLI, Vincenzo (1650–1718). Idea of the Universe. Venice, late 17th century. A large synoptic plate depicting the structure of the universe and the principles of astronomy and cosmography, from the celebrated *Atlante Veneto*. Comprising two large engraved sheets designed to be joined, the plate brings together a rich array of astronomical and cosmographical diagrams, illustrating the perpetual calendar, the zodiac, the astrological correspondences between the signs of the zodiac and the various parts of the human body, the theory of eclipses, and a cross-section of the Earth including a depiction of Hell according to the cosmology of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Two copper-engraved sheets (485 × 700 mm each), with wide margins, illustrated with astronomical diagrams and cosmographical figures, set within a decorative border featuring the heads of the winds; in good condition.
