Description
DAVID, Giovanni (1743–1790). La Pittura. Allegory of Painting. [c. 1775].
A rare allegorical etching printed on a sheet with exceptionally wide margins, depicting the personification of Painting according to classical iconography. One of the most significant engravings in David’s graphic oeuvre, it combines sophisticated draughtsmanship with remarkable inventiveness.
Etching (301 × 226 mm; sheet 530 × 785 mm). A fine impression on a complete, untrimmed sheet, bearing the ‘IMPERIAL’ watermark, three crescents and a coat of arms featuring a hand brandishing a sword. An excellent example. (1)
