Description
DAVID, Giovanni (1743–1790). Portrait of Ernestine, Countess Durazzo, née Countess Weissenwolff, Imperial Ambassador to Venice. [WITH:] Portrait of Count Durazzo. [c.1775].
A pair of refined engraved portraits of Ernestine, Countess Durazzo, née Weissenwolff, and her husband, the celebrated Genoese diplomat, bibliophile and collector Giacomo Durazzo (1717–1794), Imperial Ambassador to the Republic of Venice and one of the leading figures in eighteenth-century European cultural life. The portraits, etched and aquatinted by Giovanni David, with the likenesses finished in engraving by Giovanni Vitalba, are distinguished by the elegance of their composition and the elaborate allegorical frames surrounding the profiles of the noble couple.
Etching and aquatint, both 266 × 210 mm to the platemark (sheets 445 × 350 mm). Signed lower left David Gen. inv. et ornav. and lower right Vitalba vultum perfec. Excellent impressions with full margins. (2)
