CALLOT, Jacques (1592–1635). Set of five etchings. 17th century.
An interesting group of five original etchings by Jacques Callot, comprising: *Deux combats ou rencontres de cavalerie*, a pair consisting of *La rencontre à l’épée* and *La rencontre au pistolet*, inscribed *Callot fecit* and *Israel excudit*, conceived as pendants and subsequently associated with the *Exercices militaires*; Cap. Bombardon and Cap. Grillo, plate 13 from the celebrated *Balli di Sfessania*, c. 1621–1622, a series of 24 plates conceived during Callot’s Italian period, depicting two grotesque figures from the *Commedia dell’Arte* in the foreground with a crowd of spectators in the background; Portrait of the Prince of Phalsbourg, a large equestrian portrait of Louis de Lorraine-Guise (1588–1631), Prince of Phalsbourg and Lixheim, shown in armour on a rearing horse, with a battle scene in the background, a coat of arms and a dedicatory inscription in the lower margin; and *Les mourants sur le bord des routes*, 1633, plate 16 from *Les Grandes Misères de la Guerre*, one of the images from Callot’s celebrated cycle devoted to the consequences of the Thirty Years’ War, with French verses by Michel de Marolles (1600–1681) in the lower margin.
