Description
[ISTRIA]. FLORIANTSCHITSCH DE GRIENFELD, Johann (1691–1757). Two sheets depicting the Istrian region from the *Ducatus Carnioliae Tabula Chorographica*. Ljubljana, 1744.
Two sheets from the monumental and rare map of the Duchy of Carniola published in Ljubljana in 1744 by Johann Dimas Floriantschitsch de Grienfeld, the most famous Slovenian cartographer of the eighteenth century. The map, on a scale of 1:111,000, engraved by Abraham Kaltschmidt and comprising eleven large sheets, represents the first scientific topographical survey of the entire duchy, which was then part of the Habsburg Monarchy. The result of more than a decade of field surveys, it constitutes a landmark in the cartography of Central Europe and remained the principal geographical reference for the region throughout much of the eighteenth century. Exceptionally rare, with an estimated print run of only 500 copies, the complete map has never appeared at auction (RBH), and only six examples are currently known to exist in public collections.
Two engraved sheets (approx. 490 × 670 mm each), with a cartographic key and distance scale (minor marginal tears). (2)
