Description
[REMBRANDT]. A group of eight engravings after Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669). 18th–19th century.
An interesting group of eight engravings after celebrated etchings by Rembrandt, comprising reverse copies and 18th- and 19th-century derivations of some of the master’s best-known religious subjects and self-portraits. This lot illustrates the extraordinary popularity of Rembrandt’s graphic work and its dissemination through copies and later prints produced in the centuries that followed.
Comprising: Peter and John Healing the Cripple, reverse copy; Jan Uytenbogaert, the Goldweigher, 19th-century copy; Self-Portrait with Plumed Cap and Lowered Sabre, 19th-century copy; The Return of the Prodigal Son, reverse copy; Self-Portrait with Plumed Cap and Lowered Sabre, 19th-century copy after the reduced second state, published by Georg Leopold Hertel; Joseph’s Coat Brought to Jacob, reverse copy; Christ and the Woman of Samaria at the Well, 19th-century copy; and a portrait of Rembrandt, probably after Francesco Polanzani (1700–1783). 8 engravings. Various sizes. (8)
