Description
RICCI, Marco (1676–1730); GIAMPICCOLI, Giuliano Marco (1703–1759); FOSSATI, Davide Antonio (1708–1779). Landscapes after Marco Ricci. Venice, 18th century.
An interesting collection of 26 engravings based on compositions and paintings by Marco Ricci, drawn from two of the principal 18th-century printmaking projects dedicated to disseminating the work of the celebrated Belluno landscape painter. The main group comprises etchings by Giuliano Marco Giampiccoli, Ricci’s maternal nephew and foremost interpreter of his work in print, from the celebrated series commissioned by the merchant Bartolomeo Zucconi. The plates were completed by 1739 and published by Giampiccoli himself in 1740; the first edition comprised 36 landscapes divided into two series of eighteen plates, as represented in the present group. The figures enlivening several of the compositions have traditionally been attributed to Giambattista Tiepolo. The collection is supplemented by six plates from the series of twenty-four landscapes etched by Davide Antonio Fossati and published in Venice in 1743. Produced within just a few years of one another, these two projects bear witness to the early success of Ricci’s landscape designs in print and to their circulation amongst Venetian collectors during the mid-eighteenth century.
26 etchings in total (sheets c. 330 × 430 mm), mounted in passe-partouts (some defects). GIAMPICCOLI: 20 plates from the two series of eighteen landscapes after Marco Ricci, first edition, 1740: first series, 9 plates, nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 18; second series, 11 plates, nos. II 1, II 3, II 4, II 5, II 7, II 8, II 11, II 12, II 13, II 14 and II 16. [IN LOT WITH:] FOSSATI, Davide Antonio, after Marco Ricci. Ricci pinx.’ in the lower margin and sequentially numbered in Roman numerals. (26)
