Description
SCHMUTZER, Jakob Matthias (1733–1811) – WAGNER, Joseph (1706–1786), after Martin van Meytens the Younger (1695–1770). Portrait of Count Giacomo Durazzo. c.1765. A scarce proof prior to the addition of the lettering and before the completion of the large portrait of Giacomo Durazzo (1717–1794), diplomat, man of the theatre and one of the foremost print collectors of the eighteenth century. The plate, begun in Vienna by Jakob Matthias Schmutzer after a painting by Martin van Meytens the Younger, was subsequently completed in Venice by Joseph Wagner. In its final state, it bears the inscriptions ‘Le C. Jacques Durazzo / Ambassadeur Imperial / à Venise en MDCCLXV’, ‘Peint par Meytens’, ‘Commencé à Vienne par Schmutzer’ and ‘Achevé à Venise par Wagner’. Of particular interest, this impression documents an intermediate stage in the plate’s production: the face, background, bookcase and much of the elaborate architectural and Rococo frame are already defined by dense hatching, whilst large areas of the sitter’s clothing, the hands, armchair and several ornamental details remain blank or only lightly outlined. Etching and engraving on laid paper. Proof prior to the addition of lettering and prior to the completion of the plate, with margins (minor defects). (1)
