Description
TIEPOLO, Giandomenico (1727–1804), after Giambattista Tiepolo (1696–1770). Bearded Old Man. 1757–1762.
A fine impression of the final plate from the first book of the *Raccolta di Teste*, the celebrated series of character heads etched by Giandomenico Tiepolo after designs by his father Giambattista. The first group was produced before their departure for Madrid in 1762 and comprised twenty-seven subjects; following his father’s death in 1770, Giandomenico resumed the project, eventually bringing the series to a total of sixty etchings divided into two books of thirty plates each. The figures — old men, philosophers and Oriental characters, often bearded and wearing turbans — are derived from Giambattista’s *Teste di fantasia* and belong to the tradition of character heads, with a clear precedent in Il Grechetto’s *Teste all’orientale*. Produced between 1757 and 1762, the *Vecchio barbuto* concludes the first book of the series.
Etching and engraving, 170 × 122 mm. (1)
