Description
[PHOTOGRAPHY]. LUSWERGH, Brothers. A collection of twenty-four albumen photographs of sculptures by Giovanni Maria Benzoni. Rome, c.1860.
An important and unusually cohesive group of 24 albumen photographs documenting the work of Giovanni Maria Benzoni (1809–1873), one of the most successful Italian sculptors of the mid-nineteenth century. Of particular significance is the fact that they were produced by the Luswergh studio, pioneers of photography in Rome. Angelo Luswergh (1793–1858) and his son Giacomo (1819–1891), who were active in the field from the early 1850s, were among the leading figures in the emergence of commercial photography in the city. In 1855 they published a catalogue comprising 131 views and reproductions of works of art, regarded as the first photographic sales catalogue published in Rome. Following Angelo’s death, the business passed to Tommaso Luswergh (1823–1907) and continued under the name Fratelli Luswergh from its premises at Via dei Canestrari 8, near Piazza Navona. Devoted entirely to Benzoni’s sculpture, this collection is one of the few surviving examples from the Luswergh studio and was probably conceived as a photographic catalogue of the sculptor’s work, at a time when photography was emerging as an important new medium for the documentation and dissemination of the visual arts.
24 albumen engravings mounted on card (c. 200 × 250 mm), depicting sculptures by Giovanni Maria Benzoni, each bearing the blind stamp of the studio ‘Roma Luswergh, Via Canestrari 8’. [c. 1860s]. (24)
