Description
HUGO, Victor (1802–1885). Signed autograph letter. 21 August, undated.
An interesting autograph letter signed by Victor Hugo, addressed to an unidentified ‘Monsieur’, in which the writer intervenes on behalf of an unnamed individual, enclosing two letters and suggesting that the support of Camille Paganel (1795–1859) be sought: If Mr Paganel is willing to join us, I believe that would be of great help. Alternatively, Hugo recommends that the two letters be forwarded immediately to the Ministry of the Interior, enclosed together in a single envelope addressed to Edmond Leclerc, chief of staff. Of particular interest is the concluding passage, in which Hugo accompanies his intervention with a political and moral reflection: Have good hope, Sir. Extreme positions are never sustainable. God is on the side of those who suffer. He concludes by asking the recipient to convey his regards to Madame de Charmont and assuring him of his most distinguished regards.
Autograph letter signed, in French, on a bifolium, dated at the foot ‘21 août’ and signed ‘Victor Hugo’. Traces of the original folds, some foxing and minor marginal defects. (1)
