Description
[MANZONI]. BOITO, Arrigo (1842–1918). Re Orso. A fairy tale. Turin: Bona, 1873. A copy inscribed to Alessandro Manzoni by Arrigo Boito and Giammartino Arconati Visconti.
A copy from the library of Alessandro Manzoni (1785–1873), enhanced by a double autograph dedication from Arrigo Boito (1842–1918), the future librettist of Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), and Giammartino Arconati Visconti (1839–1914): ‘To Don Alessandro Manzoni, with the author’s most devoted homage [...] and respect’. Dated in the year of Manzoni’s death, this copy provides significant evidence of the relationship between the young leading figure of the Scapigliatura movement and the great master of Italian literature. The second edition of the celebrated fantastical poem, described by Boito himself as ‘la pazza cosa’, *Re Orso* is one of the most original experiments of the Scapigliatura movement. Under the guise of a fantastical tale, Boito constructs a modern allegory of evil and violence, destined to become one of the movement’s most representative texts.
Folio (305 × 255 mm). Lithographic ornament on the title page. Second edition, with notes by Giammartino Arconati Visconti (1839–1914). With a double autograph dedication by Arrigo Boito and Giammartino Arconati Visconti to Alessandro Manzoni. Modern half-leather binding. (1)
