PAGÈS DU TARN (1795–1866); LAMARTINE, Alphonse de (1790–1869). An autograph poem addressed to Lamartine, accompanied by Lamartine’s autograph signed letter in reply.
An interesting collection of literary autographs comprising a lengthy poem addressed by Pagès du Tarn to Alphonse de Lamartine, together with the autograph signed letter in which the French poet replies to its author. The poem, entitled *À M. de Lamartine* and signed *Pagès du Tarn*, celebrates the poet in a distinctly Romantic vein. In his reply, Lamartine states that he has read the verses ‘avec un vif intérêt’ and, whilst modestly deflecting the praise bestowed upon him, recognises in them sentiments born of ‘une imagination véritablement inspirée’, whilst applauding ‘sans réserve à la forme poétique’. He concludes with ‘mes remerciements et mes félicitations’ and signs ‘Lamartine’. A contemporary or slightly later note, ‘Avec les vers autographes de M. Pagès du Tarn dont il est question dans cette lettre’, confirms the direct connection between the two documents.
