Description
CHIAPPELLI, Francesco (1890–1947). *Le sguerguenze*. First series. Twelve original etchings. With a preface by Antonio Maraini (1886–1963). Turin: Buratti Editori, 1930.
An extremely scarce first edition of Francesco Chiappelli’s most celebrated series of engravings, limited to just 70 numbered copies, this being no. 4, with all 12 etchings signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Devoted to themes of poverty, marginalisation and human suffering, *Le sguerguenze* represents the high point of Chiappelli’s graphic work and one of the most significant cycles in twentieth-century Italian printmaking. In these plates, Chiappelli moves away from the dramatic chiaroscuro contrasts of his earlier style in favour of a spare, incisive line that lends the figures remarkable expressive intensity. Conceived as part of a more ambitious project, the series was expanded with a second group of etchings published in 1936, but remained unfinished at the time of the artist’s death.
Folio portfolio (430 × 360 mm). Title page printed in red and black, 4 pages of text and 12 original etchings, each protected by a tissue guard. Original publisher’s brown leather portfolio, with the title blind-stamped on the upper cover and retaining the original ties, housed in the publisher’s cardboard box with a printed paper label. In good condition. (1)
