Description
GROSZ, George (1893–1959). *Ecce Homo*. Berlin: Der Malik-Verlag, [1923].
A fine copy, preserved in its original publisher’s binding, of the first edition, Ausgabe C with colour plates, of one of George Grosz’s most celebrated graphic works and a scathing portrait of Berlin society during the Weimar Republic. Through a succession of street scenes, interiors, bourgeois figures, soldiers, prostitutes and war veterans, Grosz constructs a merciless satire of post-war Germany, exposing its corruption, violence and social hypocrisy. Published by the avant-garde Malik-Verlag, *Ecce Homo* immediately caused a scandal: several of its images were deemed obscene, leading in 1924 to the conviction of both the artist and the publisher Wieland Herzfelde and to the confiscation of part of the edition.
Folio (353 × 260 mm). Title page printed in red and black, 16 colour lithographic plates and 84 black-and-white plates by George Grosz; Ausgabe C . Original publisher’s illustrated boards, in good condition. (1)
