Description
[MILAN]. View of Milan Central Station. Large architectural watercolour drawing, late 19th century. A large-scale perspective view of Milan’s first Central Railway Station, one of the principal symbols of the city’s urban modernisation during the second half of the nineteenth century. Designed by the French architect Louis-Jules César Bouchot (1817–1907), the building was opened in 1864 as the terminus of Milan’s railway network and remained in use until 1931, when it was definitively replaced by the present Central Station, designed by Ulisse Stacchini. Executed as a finely detailed architectural watercolour drawing, the work depicts the station’s main façade with remarkable precision, documenting its elegant eclectic architecture and providing a valuable record of Milan’s early railway history prior to the radical urban transformations of the twentieth century. Large watercolour drawing (430 × 1500 mm), preserved in a modern frame. (1)
