Description
Philippe MOHLITZ (St André de Cubzac 1941 - Bordeaux 2019), " L'angelus " Artist's proof -Justified E/A , dated 2003, titled, signed, 15,5x20. Philippe Mohlitz is a French engraver whose work spans more than 45 years. In 1964, during his first exhibitions of drawings, the engraver Pierre Guastalla encouraged him to explore engraving. Mohlitz joined and perfected his skills in the workshop of his master, Jean Delpech, in Paris in 1965. Technically, Mohlitz favoured the burin for its rigour and mastery. Mohlitz devoted himself entirely to each stage of the engraving process, from the initial design to the final print, refusing to compromise on any artistic aspect. He illustrated prestigious works such as "Ville volante" by Marcel Bealu and "La Chanson du vieux marin" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, which had already been engraved by Gustave Doré. Mohlitz's work is characterised by enigmatic landscapes populated by recurring motifs such as forests, crashed planes and stranded boats, in which humour and eroticism appear. His complex, restless style is an assertive modernism. Mohlitz's work is like a journey into a fantastic universe where technical rigour is combined with an overflowing imagination.1967 saw a succession of exhibitions throughout France (Antibes, Paris, Avignon, Dax, Fontainebleau, Bordeaux, etc.) and abroad (Hautervie, Stuttgart, Brussels, New York, Tokyo, Madrid, Los Angeles, Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki, etc.). 2018: "Pilleurs de rêves", his latest exhibition, will be held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux.
