Description
ALBERT GREIG (Bordeaux 1913- 1997) La Garonne à Esconac (commune de QUINSAC), oil on isorel, 46x55 cm, SBG dated 1957 (located on the back) Albert Greig attended the Caudéran School of Applied Arts from the age of 13, then the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where at 17 he won first prize for antique painting, and entered Roganeau's studio. At the age of 22, he became the youngest member of the studio. He soon joined the group of Bordeaux Independent Artists, sharing their rejection of academicism and their interest in Parisian painting in the wake of the Impressionists. Close links were forged with Jac Belaubre, Édouard Boissonnet, René Tastet, and also with René Buthaud. As a landscape painter, the sky and water were his favourite themes; the Garonne, the Libourne region and Collioure are good illustrations.
Jac Belaubre described him as "the most figurative of our local painters, the most authentic (...) When the time comes, true connoisseurs will be able to discover his rare pieces, with their patina of modesty, hidden behind too much discretion".
Esconac is in the commune of QUINSAC in the Gironde.
