Description
MILDRED BENDALL (1891-1977) Bouquet floral, HST, SBD, 65x46.5cm à vue, Flower painter and portraitist, from Bordeaux of English origin, initially a pupil of Félix Carme. In the 1920s, she lived in Paris and frequented the artists of the Ecole de Paris, befriending in particular Matisse, who influenced her work, as did Albert Marquet. She created the link between the Ecole de Paris and Bordeaux painters and co-founded the Salon des Artistes Indépendants de Bordeaux, where Braque, Picasso, Utrillo, Bonnard and Matisse were exhibited. Like Lhote, she breathed modernity into painting in Bordeaux, which was too tied to academicism. She exhibited at the Salon de l'Union Féminine (1914), then at the Salon des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux and of course at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants from 1928 to 1955, later joining the Regard group. She was also a member of the Studio, a free academy created in 1929 where artists came to paint models and exchange ideas. In 1937, she exhibited in Paris alongside Dufy, Van Dongen and Max Jacob. A painter of flowers, the Basin and ports, she also painted portraits. Her work can be seen at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Musée des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux.
