Description
Edmond BOISSONNET ( Bordeaux 1906-1995), "Terrain tourmenté", HST, SBG, countersigned, titled and dated 1991 on the back, 46x55 cm. A major painter from Bordeaux who initially studied woodcarving at the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts, he turned to painting and became one of the first members of the "Artistes Indépendants Bordelais", perfecting his skills during trips to Spain and Italy, before moving to Paris to work with Molinier, Lhote, Bonnard and Dufy. After the Second World War, during which he was detained in Germany, he worked in Paris, where he exhibited, but kept a studio in Cap Ferret.
Boissonnet's painting, which involved constant research, was described successively as "realist" before the war, then "cubist", "expressionist" and, at the end of his life, "phantasmatic". He was a visual artist who expressed himself through drawings, paintings on canvas, paper, wood, collages, mosaics, using raw materials, wool tapestries and wood sculptures.
In 1961, a major exhibition in Paris and a retrospective exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux in 2006-2007 entitled "Le combat avec l'ange" ("The battle with the angel"), to describe this search for the absolute and the spiritual dimension of Edmond Boissonnet's artistic path.
