Description
MARIUS GUEIT (Bordeaux 1877-1956) "the bridge over the Garonne at Marmande", oil on panel, SBD, 65x50 cm. A pupil of Cabié, Marius Gueit started out as a decorator but became a prolific landscape painter, best known for his "Landes studies", which he painted throughout the south-west of France.
From 1904, he exhibited at the Société des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux, then in 1909 at the Salon des Artistes Français, and then regularly at L'Atelier and Les Amis des Arts, where his paintings were acclaimed by his peers.
In 1937, the newspaper "La vie bordelaise" considered him "one of our best regional painters".
The Galerie des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux held a retrospective exhibition of his work in 1953.
Since then, his works have been highly prized by auction-goers.
The bridge represented is certainly the bridge over the Garonne at Marmande.
