Description
Jean AUFORT ( Bordeaux 1898 - Tonneins 1988), "Paysage", Watercolour signed lower right. 45 x 60 cm on view. Spotting, wetness. frame 39 x 52 cm A painter, watercolourist, lithographer and illustrator, he attended the École des Beaux-arts and then the École supérieure de commerce et d'industrie in Bordeaux, from which he graduated. In 1920 he joined Paul Quinsac's studio and in 1922, thanks to the City of Bordeaux, he was awarded a three-year scholarship to study at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited regularly in various Parisian and Bordeaux salons (Société nationale des beaux-arts, galerie contemporaine, Salons de l'université, Salon des indépendants bordelais, la société bordelaise de l'Atelier, etc.) until 1943. He won the Valérie-Havard prize and a silver medal at the 1925 Paris Salon, where he exhibited until 1930. The artist's works can be found in several museums across the country. The great turning point in Jean Aufort's life was his meeting with François Mauriac, who was totally taken by his painting. They became firm friends. They worked together on several occasions, Mauriac prefacing exhibitions and Aufort illustrating Mauriac's novels.
