Description
GEORGES DE SONNEVILLE (1889-1978) L'Arc de Triomphe, oil on canvas, SBD, 27x3 cm
Georges Préveraud de Sonneville was a painter, draughtsman, engraver and caricaturist from Bordeaux. When he arrived in Bordeaux in 1903, he took painting classes with the Symbolist painter Paul Antin. He then attended the Académie Rosa Bonheur. From 1913 onwards, he alternated between living in Paris and Bordeaux, which made him a representative of modernism in Bordeaux, following in the footsteps of painters such as André Lhote, whom he met in the 1910s. In 1928, he co-founded the Salon des artistes indépendants bordelais with Jean-Loup Simian. During the 1920s, he was very active as a landscape painter. A Georges-de-Sonneville museum has been built in Gradignan as a tribute to the work of the artist and his wife Yvonne, who was also a painter.
