Description
[HISTORY] [Tax levied on the town of VILLARGONDRAN [Savoy], to contribute towards the costs of lifting the blockade of Pinerolo] Printed poster measuring 39 x 28 cm, “By the King’s command”, bearing the full royal coat of arms encircled by the Cross of Saint Louis, undated, addressed by Nicolas François de Bonval, Squire and Councillor to the King, serving His Majesty in Savoy, to the inhabitants of Villargondran. He informs them that they have been taxed the sum of two hundred and fifteen livres, as their share of the campaign expenses for the lifting of the blockade of Pignerol. These costs are justified by ‘the sustenance and upkeep of five hundred mules requisitioned in Savoy, and a further 300 taken from elsewhere on behalf of the said province. The cost of transporting eight thousand quintals of oats from Grenoble to Suze, and the purchase in Lyon of two thousand six hundred and twenty quintals of further oats for the sustenance of five regiments of Cavalry and Dragoons over several days in September. The total amounts to one hundred and ninety thousand two hundred and twenty-one livres. ... His Majesty’s intention is that this expenditure should be borne by the said States of Savoy, as a contribution towards the defence of the said stronghold, owing to its proximity.” Attached: “Printed placet (20 x 15 cm): ‘Sir, you are to pay, within three days, into the hands of Mr Daumas, Treasurer of the Corps of Upholsterers, your fee for the fourth class. In Marseille, 31 March 1779. Signed Vivalier.” Document framed with a gilded moulding. Also enclosed: Framed notarial document. Handwritten text in Italian.
