Description
[ANTIQUE BOOKS] THE ONE HUNDRED SHORT STORIES. Illustrations by Romain de Hooghe Here follow the hundred short stories, comprising the ‘Cent Histoires Nouveaux’, which are most delightful to recount in any good company, for the sake of merriment. A new edition, adorned with a hundred engravings and a frontispiece. Cologne: Pierre Gaillard, 1786; 4 volumes in 2 large 12mo volumes (18 x 11.5 cm) comprising (4) V–144, (4)–196, (4)–158 and (4)-157-(4) pages, with 100 separate etched plates after Romain de Hooghe (only the frontispiece is signed by Romain de Hooghe and engraved by G. vander Gouwen). Binding imitating an 18th-century style. Spined back, decorated with gilt metal tools and fleurons. Mottled edges. The plates are not included in the pagination and each bears a caption of a few lines at the bottom and the story number printed at the top. A fine print of the 100 engravings by Romain de Hooghe, the first print of which dates from the 1701 edition.
