Description
[ANTIQUE BOOKS] [HISTORY] A Collection of the Most Curious Documents Produced during the Reign of the Constable, M. de Luynes. No place, 1624. 8vo. Full contemporary binding in ivory-coloured vellum. Plain spine. Handwritten title on the spine. 20 unnumbered folios, 536 pages. A collection of plays in prose or verse, originally published between 1619 and 1622 and directed against the Duke of Luynes. Of particular note is a play against Théophile de Viau [pp. 122–140], based on his *Advis au Roy*. A total of 64 pamphlets. This collection first appeared in 1620, the result of a publishing project likely supported (or initiated) by Richelieu. A second edition in 1622 gave it its definitive title. Our copy, dated 1624, bears the inscription ‘third edition, revised, corrected and expanded’. An edition from 1632 bears the inscription ‘fourth edition’. Charles Albert, Duke of Luynes (1578–1621), a favourite of Louis XIII, was responsible for the exile of the future Richelieu following the assassination of Concini. A campaign of pamphlets organised by Marie de Médicis and the Bishop of Luçon (Richelieu) produced, between 1619 and 1622, over a hundred texts against the duke. Luynes’ rise to power was meteoric: a duke and peer in 1619, he became Constable of France in 1621 and then Keeper of the Seals upon the death of Guillaume de Vair. ‎"
