This novel was one of Mouhy’s greatest successes. This *Masque de fer* does not recount the eponymous story set under Louis XIV, but rather the story of Don Pèdre, Viceroy of Catalonia, and his secret wife, the sister of the King of Castile; the king bursts into the chamber and confines the faces of the couple beneath an iron mask. In the preface, the author lists no fewer than four stories of iron masks in Turkey, England… similar to the one that occurred in France under Louis XIV.
