Description
[ANTIQUE BOOKS] [LITERATURE] [RESTIF de la BRETONNE] ‎Scenes from High Society. In Paris. Characteristic traits, secret anecdotes, and political, moral and literary observations gathered from fashionable circles during the years 1786 and 1787. ‎ Paris. No publisher, 1787 and 1788. 2 volumes in one 12° volume. 216 pp. and full contemporary sheepskin binding. Flat spine, decorated with gilt fillets. Small loss to the cap. Broken jaw. The BNF catalogue entry indicates that the plates [by Moreau the Younger] which should accompany this work are missing. The text is most entertaining: it offers a succession of short stories (mostly in the first person) set in the salons and places frequented by high society, along with dialogues and conversations; the whole forms a literary and engaging framework for political and moral anecdotes. P.S. – Rives-Child attributes this text to the Prince de Ligne. According to the BNF, it is by Restif.
