These *Lettres nouvelles* are a collection of contemporary chronicles, news of the city and the court, fables, tales and satires. The 13 letters from a lady to a gentleman form a short narrative. The third volume consists of the *Lettres de Babet*.
Boursault is better known and remembered as a playwright, although posterity has often remembered him only for his role as censor of Molière’s *L’école des femmes* and his ill-fated involvement in the theatrical quarrels of the 17th century. The author, however, worked in many literary fields, notably the short story and the novel, writing in a free and light-hearted style.
