[ANTIQUE BOOKS] [LITERATURE] TACITUS Tacitus, a new translation by M. Dureau de Lamalle. Volumes I–III Paris, published by Théophile Barrois the Younger, 1790. 3 volumes, 8vo. Volume 1: Lxxix, 550 pp., 2 unnumbered pages (Errata). Volume 2: 485 pp. [Page 337, numbered 373; page 359, numbered 357; Volume 3: 477 pp. ? 3 unnumbered pages (Errata, approval and privilege) Full binding in light brown sheepskin. Smooth spine (worn), decorated with an interlaced pattern of gilded iron motifs. Red morocco leather pieces (title) and bronze-green morocco leather pieces (volume number). Covers edged with a gilded Greek fret. Red-speckled edges. After sixteen years of work, Dureau de Lamalle (1742–1807) published, in 1790, the first edition of his translation of Tacitus, of whom J. J. Rousseau and d’Alembert had translated only fragments. The complete translations by d’Ablancourt and Father Dotteville, pale imitations of the vigorous chronicler of Tiberius and Nero, undoubtedly left much to be desired.
