2 volumes, XXXVI, 516 pp. + 495 pages, frontispiece and 24 plates. Full contemporary binding in tobacco-coloured sheepskin, spine with floreted raised bands, cherry-coloured title labels. Imperfections (lack of leather at the top of the joints). A small loss at the bottom of the spine.
A new edition of this two-part work, one part dealing with the origin of the Greek world according to Warburton’s system and the history of the deities, the other containing an analysis of the ideas of the ancient philosophers, which Noël-Antoine Pluche (1688–1761) contrasts with the cosmogony of Moses, ‘whose superiority he endeavours to demonstrate, independently of any revelation’ (Quérard).
The first edition of *Histoire du ciel* was published in Paris in 1739.
A very complete copy with all 25 intaglio-engraved plates, including the frontispiece depicting Democritus; these depict figures and objects of worship associated with Egyptian, Greek and Roman mythologies.
