[MEDICINE] J. E. Petrequin
Hippocrates’ Surgery in 2 volumes
Paris. Imprimerie Nationale, 1878.
2 paperback volumes in 4°. Unbound copies, to be rebound. Volume I. 565 pp. 1877 & Volume II. IV + 651 pp. Text in French and Greek.
Joseph Pierre Eléonord Pétrequin (1809–1876) was one of the 24 French surgeons to hold the distinguished post of chief surgeon at the Hôtel-Dieu in Lyon.
It was two years after his death that his life’s principal work, *Hippocrates’ Surgery*, was published: this two-volume work, running to over 1,200 pages, demonstrated that Hippocrates is indeed the father of medicine but also a great surgeon, and that his observations had been unjustly overlooked.
Binding is recommended.
Provenance: The BOUCHARD-GUIARD—PIERRET-THERRE Collection, a dynasty of military and civilian doctors and surgeons from the late 18th to the late 20th century.
