Daumas (1803–1871) took part in the campaigns of Mascara and Tlemcen. An Arabist, he served as Consul in Mascara to Emir Abd El-Kader from 1837 to 1839, then directed and reorganised the administration of the Arab offices from 1841 to 1847. At Bugeaud’s instigation, he compiled *The Algerian Sahara* based on a vast number of indigenous accounts and supported by extensive documentation, thereby paving the way for the exploration of the desert.
