Description
A pair of polished axes, known as ‘MEN-GURUN’.
- The first is made of grey stone and, according to an old label, was collected at Quimilfern in April 1940.
Height: 9 cm. Blade length: 5.6 cm. (Chip on the cutting edge).
- The second is made of grey-green serpentine-type stone.
Height: 10 cm. Length of cutting edge: 4.5 cm. (Chips on the cutting edge).
Neolithic period.
Provenance: collection of Baron M. de B., Manoir du Vally in Guingamp. Passed down through the family.
In Breton folklore, polished axes were known as ‘Men-Gurun’ or ‘Thunder Stone’. People attributed special virtues and protective powers to them. (In *Traou kozh*, *Folk Artefacts of Ancient Brittany*, Denis Korentin, Blanc et Noir, Vannes, 2021, p. 112.)
