GEO-FOURRIER (Lyon, 1898 – Quimper, 1966) Georges FOURRIER, known as ‘The Seaweed Burner of Notre-Dame de la Joie’, 1936 Watercolour or wood engraving, signed and titled in the bottom right-hand corner. Engraved and produced by the publisher Takamizawa, in Tokyo. Height: 25.5 cm. Width: 34 cm. (Visible area). Provenance: Géo-Fourrier’s personal collection. Géo-Fourrier collaborated with Takamizawa on four prints, including our ‘Seaweed Burner’. He would send his gouaches to the Tokyo-based publisher. These works, passing through the hands of Japanese master engravers, were transformed by that incomparable Japanese spirit. This work was awarded the silver medal at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition.
