Description
Paul LENGELLE (Paris, 1908 – Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1993) – Air Force Painter in 1936
The “Strasbourg”
Gouache, signed and titled in the lower left-hand corner.
Height: 47.5 cm. Length: 99.5 cm. Visible. (Rare and very slight foxing).
Launched at Saint-Nazaire in 1936, the Strasbourg housed a seaplane hangar. It is these that can be seen in the background of our artwork. In 1940, it escaped the attack on Mers-El-Kébir. On board was Marin-Marie, who would go on to give a powerful account of this tragedy. Having taken refuge in Toulon, the ship was scuttled in 1942 to prevent it from falling into German hands. Raised in 1944, it was sunk shortly afterwards by American bombing raids in preparation for the Provence landings.
