Description
René-Yves CRESTON (Saint-Nazaire, 1898 – Etables-sur-Mer, 1964) for Maison Prunier
“Some stages in the life of the oyster …”
A set of 15 colour plates in a slipcase, based on watercolours produced in 1929 to illustrate the restaurant’s menus.
Plates titled on the reverse. Limited and numbered edition of 273. Handwritten dedication by the artist: “da va Keneil Ker Youenn ar Drezenn / a Galon, va goué kemenon var RY Creston” (To my friend Youenn Le Drezenn, with my affection). Dated August 1930.
Height of the plates: 30 cm. Width: 21.5 cm. (Cover stained, foxing, tears. Proof of print slightly stained, small tear in the margin).
Youenn Le Drezenn (Pont-L’Abbé, 1899 – Lorient, 1972) was a Breton writer.
His friendship with Jackez Riou led him to write in defence of the Breton language.
He therefore contributed to several newspapers, such as *Le Courrier du Finistère*. His associations with the Breiz Atao movement led to his dismissal in 1931.
He was described as a “proletarian writer” by the General Secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF) following the publication of his novel *Itron Varia Garmez*. Imprisoned after the Liberation for having denounced the abuses committed by the FFI, he was cleared of the charges of collaboration and continued his writing career.
