Description
Jules LE RAY (1875–1938) ‘La Sardinerie’ Oil on canvas, 1927 Signed and dated ‘27’ in the lower right-hand corner. Bears several labels on the back of the stretcher, including “Galerie Joseph Billiet” in Paris and “Galerie Moyon-Avenard” in Nantes. Dimensions: 54 cm x 73 cm Frame: 64 cm x 83 cm Minor wear and craquelure. Whilst still very young, Jules Le Ray, born in Nantes, studied under Gauguin at Le Pouldu. He conveys a synthetic vision of harbours and coastlines; here, a sardine factory, no doubt near Doëlan. His Cubist style is reminiscent of the dreamlike and mysterious atmosphere of a De Chirico.
