Description
A ‘Jang seung’ totem of a protective guardian, made of heavy wood and painted red, black and white, with the upper section carved to depict a grimacing male face, his mouth baring his teeth and his gaze fierce, wearing a traditional flat-brimmed hat. It has a tiered base. Cracks and damage to the base. These totems were generally placed in pairs – one male, one female – at the entrance to villages to ward off evil spirits.
