Description
Hourglass, known as an ‘organ case’ hourglass, made of brass, glass and wood
Each sand vessel is made of glass, with a wax and fabric seal to keep the sand in place
The elapsed times are indicated by the numbers on the sand vessels
The cabinet comprises a repoussé brass frame with an oblong base, featuring ten slender twisted columns, secured at the base by hooks
The upper section features a pediment depicting the bust of a man—possibly a helmeted officer—on a pedestal, alongside military motifs and war regalia
The whole is secured by a wooden frame with a hole allowing the cabinet to be rotated
The hourglasses still contain fine sand (frozen in time)
A similar model dated 1767 is featured in the catalogue of hourglasses from the Delalande Gallery, number 51, and in the book *Time Museum*, Volume 1, Part 3, 1984, by A.J. Turner (ref. 27)
