Description
Cape Hornman’s walking stick made from shark vertebrae (species unknown) and horn (pommel, tip and rings) The base of the pommel bears the inscription ‘T.W.C.’ Probably England – second half of the 19th century L. 81 cm (signs of wear and chips) Note: Traditionally, the crew would present their captain with a shark-vertebra walking stick upon rounding Cape Horn to thank him for guiding the ship through this treacherous stretch of water. Once ashore, the captain hangs the cane like a trophy in his home and, upon his death, the cane is placed in the church or on the deceased’s coffin
