Manufacture SAUTER & Cie (21st century) Watercolour carbon lunar globe on papier mâché Based on data from the map produced during NASA’s Lola mission Signed and numbered copy Wooden plinth Handcrafted in the tradition of 18th- and 19th-century workshops Diameter: 32 cm Note: Founded in 2016 in Besançon by Alain SAUTER (a lecturer and researcher in geography with a passion for cartography), Sauter & Cie is France’s last remaining globe-making workshop. Renowned for the quality of its creations, the company regularly receives awards for its rare craftsmanship. Six people work in the workshop, which produces around a hundred creations each year. Each piece requires a five-stage artisanal process: shaping (which involves creating a plaster sphere, the base of the globe), cartography (which involves selecting the map to be printed and cut into meridian strips), gluing (a crucial stage in which the map strips are assembled onto the sphere to create the globe), colouring (which enhances the relief and details of the maps and applies layers of protective varnish to ensure the object can be handled safely) and mounting (involving the creation of a stand or plinth crafted by a cabinetmaker from fine woods such as oak or Jura beech). It is thus an entirely artisanal process that enables the workshop to perpetuate more than three centuries of French expertise in the craft of globe-making
