Dudley ADAMS (1762–1830) Library celestial globe by Dudley ADAMS on its stand, with a spacer compass A fine globe bearing a dedication to King George III, with the address 60 Fleet Street, London The globe is in perfect condition, with its colours still fresh and fine craftsmanship, featuring constellations, stars, a calendar, etc. The table features a zodiacal calendar The whole is fitted with a brass armillary sphere mounted on an hour circle George III period, circa 1796–1817 H. (globe) 41 cm – H. (total) 82 cm (restorations and missing parts) Note: Sons of the globe-maker George Adams the Elder (1709–1772), Dudley Adams and his brother George the Younger were trained by their mother in the craft of cartography at the family shop in Charing Cross following their father’s death. Having become an apprentice in 1777, Dudley took over the shop in 1788. In 1796, he moved to Fleet Street, under the sign ‘Tycho Brahe’s Head’, until 1817, when he moved to St Paul’s Churchyard to set up a business in electro-medicine. The business ceased trading following Dudley’s death in 1830. Dudley Adams was optician to the Prince of Wales and globe-maker to the King.
