Charles DIEN (1809–1870) Celestial globe by Charles DIEN, produced by Bertaux and dedicated to Mr A. Bouvard, with its brass table and blackened wooden base Circa 1840 H. 58 cm – D. 32 cm (restorations, crack) Note: Charles Dien the elder was an engraver for the Delamarche firm around 1820. Consequently, Charles Dien the younger soon began to take an interest in maps and stars. He was responsible for numerous publications and atlases on astronomical phenomena, including the ‘Description and Use of the Celestial Globe’ in 1833. Between 1840 and 1850, Charles Dien the Younger produced celestial globes, some of which were dedicated to Alexis Bouvard (1767–1843). Bouvard was also an astronomer, an assistant at the Bureau des Longitudes, a co-discoverer of the planet Neptune (his observations led to the discovery of this planet), the discoverer of eight comets, and the creator of new tables on Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus
