Eglomised glass ‘boule de pardon’ or ‘boule de mariée’ Late 19th century Diameter: 14 cm Note: The tradition of ‘boules de pardon’ originates in Brittany, where young men buy glass balls during the ‘Messe du Pardon’ (local masses held to honour a saint associated with the local church). The purchase is made either to have a memento of the day and to give it to a relative who was unable to attend, or to present it to the young man’s beloved as a sign of his intention to marry her. In the latter case, the larger the ball, the greater the debt. The baubles are displayed and kept within families for generations. These baubles generally originate from factories in Lorraine (the Goetzenbruck glassworks) near the Vosges, the epicentre of Christmas bauble production.
